Don's radio career took off in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas on KDUB AM 1340 where he was playing countryish records on top 40 radio & KLLL AM 1460 where he was playing country records and working along side Waylon Jennings. Don was one of the first to play Tom Dooley by the Kingston Trio. Other Lone Star State gigs included KVET AM 1300 in Austin, KFLD AM 900 in Floydada, and KELP AM 920 in El Paso. He also entertained listeners in San Diego on KDEO AM 910 (as one of the Swinging Seven D.J.'s), in the Bay Area on KEWB AM 910, in the Twin Cities on KDWB AM 630, in Nashville on WKDA AM 1240 (as one of the Good Guys) and in Burbank on KBBQ AM 1500. In 1973, he subbed for Casey Kasem on American Top 40 before he became the original host of American Country Countdown. Don closed out his radio career in Branson, Missouri on Hometown Country -- KRZK FM 106.3.
